If you’ve decided to visit the Land of Smiles for your next vacation getaway, one of the first things you need to check is the visa requirements. Here are a few key points of information that you need to know before making travel arrangements to Thailand.
Different Visa Types
There are different visa types with varying application processes, which are available depending on your country:
- Thailand Tourist Visa – also known as the Thailand eVisa, this is available for certain foreign nationals.
- Thailand Visa on Arrival (VOA) – permits eligible citizens to obtain Thai visas at the immigration counters once they arrive in the country. However, applicants will likely have to wait in longer queues.
- Thailand eVOA – visitors from certain countries can avoid the VOA queues and instead apply for a pre-approved visa to be obtained on arrival.
- Thailand Embassy Visa – those who aren’t eligible for any of the above will need to apply for a Thai visa at a Thai embassy closest to them.
Important Documents Required for an eVisa
The following documents are mandatory for obtaining a Thailand eVisa:
- A high-quality passport photo taken against a white background.
- A clear scan of the bio-data page of your passport.
- Arrival and return flight tickets to show proof that you intend to return home after your visit.
- Proof of accommodation in Thailand, whether you’re staying with a host or at any of the Bangkok hotel suites located within luxurious hotels like Pathumwan Princess Hotel.
- Proof of your residential address back in your home country.
What to Do Before Travelling
The first thing you need to do is check whether you are eligible for visa-free entry into Thailand based on your nationality and for how long you are permitted to stay. If not, you’ll need to determine the type of visa you require. Next, ensure that your passport will be valid for a minimum of 6 months after you arrive in Thailand. And lastly, gather all the necessary documents for your visa.
Important Update – The Thailand ETA
Beginning in June 2025, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will be required for visitors from visa-exempt countries. This will be a single-entry permit, with the application process being handled online.
